ALBUM REVIEW: SOULFLY – “ENSLAVED”

For those of you don’t know, Soulfly is the brainchild of Sepultura guitarist and mastermind Max Cavalera.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Cavalera’s work, but had beef with him after he left Sep to form his new band.  At the time I was upset because that’s just when the whole rap metal thing was peaking, and their self titled record was jam packed with cameos that fit that definition.  (Any record whose liner notes include the mention of Fred Durst is immediately out of my listening cycle based on principle alone, and makes me long for a time when Fred Durst was not a talking point anywhere)

So to be honest, I had forgotten about Soulfly for the most part.  Max has other side projects (most notably Cavalera Conspiracy) and I guess I thought he would eventually return to Sepultura, but to this date he hasn’t.  Soulfly’s lineup has changed considerably over the years and on this record it features the addition of drummer David Kinkade of Bornagar and bassist Tony Campos of Ministry fame.
