Theo Von is currently the host of Yahoo!’s popular daily recap show, Primetime in No Time, which averages over one million views a day. He is also the genius behind CrankTexts.com, a website where he texts random numbers and gets into conversations with total strangers. CrankTexts was a weekly featured article on College Humor. CrankTexts.com has had 10 million page views and averages 18 clicks per visit. Theo has also been the host of The Comedy Sideshow podcast – consistently one of the 10 most downloaded video podcasts on iTunes. He is a Louisiana native whom you may recognize as the winner of Comedy Central’s Reality Bites Back, from NBC’s Last Comic Standing S4, and Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham. Theo’s work as a stand-up comedian has garnered him numerous accolades including performing internationally at the South African Comedy Festival and in the states at both the Chicago JFL Festival and South Beach Comedy Festival and later this summer at Montreal’s JFL Festival. He attended 7 colleges/universities as a full time student, including Semester at Sea, a program actively fundraises for. He currently headlines comedy clubs every weekend across the country. And he’s our guest today in 5 Questions.
FOH: Do you think that most people are able to separate Theo Von the reality star from Theo Von the comedian?
TV: By now yes. I’m almost 8 years sober from reality TV, and i never get recognized from it anymore. Also, having done a Comedy Central Half Hour and being cast on different non-reality shows lets me know that the entertainment industry recognizes me differently as well.
FOH: What’s the most unusual experience that you’ve had while on the road doing standup?
TV: Ended up pretending a homeless dude was my friend and got us both invited into a limo and to an insane party while in Louisville. Things hit the fan though, when the dude flipped out at the party and pissed in a few different places. Whatever though.
FOH: You’re the host of a daily recap show on Yahoo! called “Primetime in No Time”. Could you tell us a little about that?
TV: Im loving my job hosting for Yahoo. ’Primetime in No Time’ is actually the most viewed show ever on the internet. We cover the ‘buzziest’ moments from the previous night in award shows, unscripted shows, and talk shows. Our head writer Matt Goldich is amazing, and we have a great team.
FOH: Has the whole “crank texting” thing ever landed you in any sort of legal hot water?
TV: Nope. I don’t mess with a lot of litigation. I agree it’s a bit risqué at times, but it’s the evolution of crank calling and I’m just pioneering it. www.cranktexts.com
FOH: Your podcast “The Comedy Sideshow” is very funny and one of the more popular comedy podcasts on iTunes…What’s different about your podcast in particular and do you think that medium has become oversaturated?
TV: The Comedy Sideshow is a video podcast, so at least you can see it. I enjoy sitting down and chatting with other comics and seeing what they are up to. This business is so busy, that I rarely get time to sit and chat about much besides work.
FOH: What do you have planned for the next twelve months?
TV: Well I just had my first movie role, so I’m hoping that it makes it into theaters. Outside of that I’m working on developing and producing a few projects both scripted and unscripted. It’s such a great time in this industry because there are so many outlets for creativity, and so many creative thugs to partner up with. Outside of work I’m chasing a few chicas, taking piano lessons, skyping with my nieces and nephews back in Louisiana, and considering getting laser hair removal on a few select body areas.
